It’s been a hot July, and 47 of the 50 States here in the US are under “Extreme Heat Index” which basically means that it is a sauna everywhere you go. For those of us with cold plunge tanks or lakes or ocean close by, we tend to exhibit hippopotamus style hanging out between rounds.
Do your ears suffer from repetitive cold plunge between sauna round syndrome?
With this, I’ve been getting more and more “Swimmer’s Ear.” My wife thinks it’s because I have hair growing out of them, like an un-groomed zoo animal. So, with some trimming, I discuss swimmer’s ear with Dr. Brennan T. Dodson, MD, FARS from Bridger Ear, Nose and Throat. He built his own sauna and saunas like a madman, just like you and me. Dr Dodson offers his insight here.

Maine sauna action
It’s hot up in Maine, too, and Garrett Connover shares with us a snapshot of sauna culture happening there. Maine is a wonderful place for sauna, with warm hearted folks bringing the action forward. Click here, and you’ll see what I mean.
Sauna Talk: Ragna from Oslo Badstuforening
I am back to Norway, where the Oslo Sauna Association, founded in 2016, serves Oslo with 19 different saunas (and counting), most of which are floating. Let’s have some lunch together as we Sauna Talk podcast with General Secretary Ragna Marie Fjeld. Link is here.
Private sauna of the month
When people aren’t sure whether to go wood fired or electric, sometimes they may put one of each heater in their hot room. Not quite the case for Ben Johansen’s poolside sauna, which offers two hot rooms: one electric and one wood fired, providing the option of a full spectrum of really good heat. Let’s head down to Oklahoma and take a tour, here.
Sauna Aid
I was in Duluth last week (92°f.) where I presented at FinnFest updates on Sauna Aid, who has partnered with RePower, to support Ukranian frontline medics.
Afterwhich, I headed up the North Shore, where I spontaneously met up and, without earplugs, dove into the clear Lake Superior waters with Chad and buddy From North Shore Sauna. Ringing out my Troxers, I then headed further North where, I had just enough gas to roll into the driveway of Michael Nordskog’s electricity-less cabin. His century old sauna was up to serving temperature. We got right to it, sitting on the bench to feel the Opposite of Cold.
Gasing up, then driving further North to our island cabin, I got to think about sauna commerce and cooperation. How in this country, it’s easy to get tripped up with the commerce, when all along cooperation with like minded people, with good hearts, is where it’s at.
Here’s to you and your sauna friends, and hearts beating in the right direction. I hope you are enjoying your summer!
